Almonds Can Help With Immunity ?

We often see advertisements that talk of nuts like walnuts, almonds, pistachios, etc., that help boost memory and cognitive powers. These nuts are nutritious because they contain healthy fats, dietary fibre, several B vitamins, vitamin E and minerals like calcium, zinc, potassium, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese and selenium.

Phew! That is quite a lot of nutrients in these tiny nuts, isn’t it?

Among these nuts, almonds are popular for their brain health benefits. However, many recent studies have shown that almonds are actually great immunity boosters too. Infact, it is the almond skin that has shown to have anti-viral properties.

Surprising right?
How do Almonds Help with Immunity?
There have been multiple studies performed on almond skin that have shown to increase immune response. Eating almonds is said to increase the immune system’s ability to fight a wide range of viruses, including those that cause cold and flu.
But what in almonds bestows upon them immunity-strengthening properties?

Well, among the nutrients present in this nut, almonds contain antioxidants like phenols and flavonoids.

Though the almond skin forms only 10% of the total weight of the nut, it has a strong influence on the immune system and shows anti-viral properties.

It has been observed that the body produces increased levels of specific markers such as Interferon alpha, TNF or tissue necrosis factor, interleukin-12, etc., when exposed to almond skin.

Why is this Important?
It is rather amazing to think that almond skin boosts immunity. With so many viral diseases out there, it becomes essential to protect our body and boost its defenses.  However, when you eat almonds as a healthy snack, in your morning breakfast cereal, in salads or deserts, most often, the skin is removed, isn’t it?  But, blanching and removing the skin of the almond reduces its immunity!

Therefore, it is important we re-evaluate how we eat nuts like almonds as they are important immunity boosters in times like these when our body needs it the most.
